Garden Plants

In Australia about 1000 species of plants are poisonous and harmful for the livestock and the humans. The poisonous native species belong to about 70 of the more than 200 native plant families. The families that have more than 10 toxic species are the legumes (Fabaceae, Mimosaceae), the spurges (Euphorbiaceae), the cycads (Cycadaceae, Zamiaceae), the riceflowers (Thymelaeaceae), the nightshades and tobaccos (Solanaceae), the grasses (Poaceae), the saltbushes (Chenopodiaceae) and the buttercups (Ranunculaceae). Hence, while selecting plants for your garden you have to be very careful and well-versed with all the species of plants.

There are a whole bunch of landscaping plants, shrubs, trees and flowers that one can choose from. They are either annual or perennial plants.

-Autumn flowering bulbs: They are available as Belladonna lilies, which come in white or pink and are huge flowers with 6 fragrant trumpets. Colchicum, are superb as potted flowers that come in lilac-rose blooms. The others are Lycoris – spider lilies, Nerines, Zephyranthes(rain lilies), Sternbergia lutea and crinum alba.

-Spring flowering bulbs: Allium, Anemones, Babiana, Chincherinchee, Crocus, Cuban lily, Daffodils, Dutch iris, Freesias, Hyacinths, Ixia, Jonquils, Lachenalia, Leucocoryne, Muscari, Ornithogalum, Queen Fabiola, Ranunculi, Scilla (Bluebells), Snowflakes, Sparaxis, Spring Star, Tritonia, Tulips and Watsonia come in this variety.

-Summer flowering bulbs: Arum Lilies, Calla Lilies, Dahlias, Gladioli, Hippeastrum, Pineapple Lily and Zantedeschias are the summer friendly, which come in different colours.

-Climbers: They include varieties like Climbing Frangipani, Grape (Ornamental), Hoya Indian Rope, Hoya Indian Rope Variegated, Jasmine Chinese Emperor, Mandevilla Alice Du Pont, Mandevilla Ruby Star, Mandevilla White Delight, White & Yellow Banksia Rose, Wisterias and Clematis.

-Foliage Plants: Bromeliads, Coleus, Cordylines, Ferns and Hostas are available in this. Some of the other varieties are Agave, Viola Mars, Cineraria Silverdust and Spathiphyllum White (peace lily or madonna lily).

Hedge Plants: Box leaved honeysuckle, Camellia (Setsugekka), Conifer (Castlewellan Gold), Catmint blue beauty, Dutch, English, Korean and Japanese box, Photinia robusta, Pittosporum eugenoides, Pittosporum silver sheen, Ligustrum undulatum, Mexican orange blossom, Rosemary blue lagoon, White & Yellow banksia rose are some of the hedge varieties. Some of them are perennial while some are there from spring to autumn.

 

-Ornamental Trees: Deciduous Trees are very comfortable in full sun and a full grown tree provides excellent shade. Some of the flowering trees are Bean tree, Crab apple (Floribunda), Crepe Myrtles (Common, Sioux, and Tuscarora), Pink silk tree, Persian lilac and Weeping Cherry (Pendula white and rubra). Evergreen Trees include Soft tree fern, Olive manzanillo, Cordyline Australis, Banksia ericifolia, Callistemon (Weeping Red) and Yucca elephantipes.

-Fruit Trees: Avocados, apples, pears, citrus fruits like lemon and oranges and stone fruits like cherry, apricot, nectarine, peach and plumcot are some of the trees that can be grown in your garden.

Besides these, there are different species and types of conifers, ground covers, irises, shrubs, roses, topiary plants, and succulents that are available at many plant nurseries and can be grown and looked after.
